Hospitality Innovation Award
This year, on the occasion of the gala evening, the Hospitality Innovation Award was granted to two companies which have taken up the hostel concept and developed it further: both Meininger city hostel & hotels and wombat’s have evolved, due to their innovative thinking, to become the leading protagonists of the hostel scene in Europe. It is especially this combination of hostel and hotel aspect which PKF hotelexperts would like to award with the Hospitality Innovation Award.
Despite the different approaches both companies pursue, several similarities can be found when looking at their history and strategy. For one, both businesses started their triumph in 1999; Meininger city hostels & hotels with their first opening in Berlin and wombat’s in Vienna. Furthermore, wombat’s and Meininger city hostels & hotels offer their guests “attractive social exchange points” as well as a “communicative atmosphere", which encourages guests to socialize. Both businesses indicate that besides the fair price especially this sociable (informal, relaxed) atmosphere and casual surrounding is (as) their main distinguisher to budget hotels. wombat’s and Meininger city hostels & hotels focus on European major cities with strong presence in Germany and Austria. What started in 1999 with one hotel/hostel has developed in subsequent years to a significant business venture.
In 2007, the award was granted to Carlo Petrini, founder and international president of the Slow Food Movement. Peter-Mario Kubsch, Managing Director of Studiosus Reisen, won the Hospitality Innovation Award in 2008.
