Hospitality Innovation Award 2009
This year the Hospitality Innovation Award on the occasion of the gala evening was given to two companies which have taken up the idea of hostels and creatively developed it: both Meininger city and wombat's have established themselves due to their innovation spirit as the leading protagonists in the hostels sphere within Europe. With this Hospitality Innovation Award PKF hotelexperts would like to acknowledge in particular the linking of the hostel and hotel issues.
Diverse parallels can be found in the history and strategy of both companies despite different approaches. Thus the Meininger city hostels & hotels in 1999 in Berlin and wombat's in the same year in Vienna started their triumphal march. Moreover, both concepts offer "informal social interfaces" and "communicative atmosphere", in which it is easy for the guests to establish new contacts. In addition to the fair price it is this informal environment that constitutes the most important distinguishing feature from the conventional budget hotels. Wombat's and Meininger city hostels & hotels are focused on the major European cities with significant presence in Germany and Austria. What has begun in the time as a hostel/hotel in 1999 has developed in subsequent years into something more large-scale.
